The Refuge Madawaska Shelter…a First Nation idea
This is a
good cause...if people would think about it...and have a good look around their
reserves...some of them are swamped with dogs on the loose with no owner, cats
all over the place with no one to care for them. This area is reeking with
stray animals and many cases of animal abuse BUT not on the reserve because the
problem has been dealt with…but off reserve it’s pretty bad. The animals do need our help. Right now the
only way to help them is putting them into foster care and some foster care
homes are swamped with not just one or two but dozens of homeless animals. We
want them all to have a second chance so euthanasia is not part of the process.
These animals need homes and the care of humans.
The Refuge Madawaska Shelter is a non-profit
organisation that came to be when a couple of ladies decided enough was
enough - animals were being put down, abandoned and mistreated in our area
because there was no shelter to help them.
Since March of 2012, we have managed to rescue over 100 animals, got them vet checked, took care of them, vaccinated and found them permanent homes who adopted them. We are now able to spay and neuter the animals that enter the Refuge Madawaska Shelter's system, all this without any government funding. We are in the community and supported by the community.
Since there is no shelter, that is our greatest need. Our request for a local, large parcel of land has recently been accepted, and it already has utilities set up! The animals will have plenty of room to play and socialize. Now, we need to build a low-cost building to house the animals. Many people have offered us their services for free to help with the construction, plumbing and electricity, but we do not have the necessary funds to purchase the materials to put this in motion - we estimate that will cost us close to $100 000.
Currently we operate out of foster families only. Unfortunately, there are just not enough people willing to open their homes to these furry babies, even temporarily.
We generally set up appointments and adoption via Facebook, emails and telephone calls, at a location that is convenient to both potential owners and the foster families. Having a shelter would mean more lives being saved, more animals being treated and a central location where adoptions could take place. We truly desperately need something here for these helpless animals. We have worked so very hard and for years now, the community has been working towards a shelter with no results as of yet. Help us help the animals. Vote for our idea and help make our dream come true - to be able to offer animals in need a safe haven until a permanent family comes for them!
